Ironic, isn’t it? Perhaps that’s why the agency’s strictness and fairness continue to this day.

One of the hottest topics in today’s investment market is virtual assets, or the crypto market, right? For the past 10 years, there has been an ongoing debate between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the industry over whether crypto is a ‘security’ or not. But in March 2026, the SEC finally issued an official statement: major virtual assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum are ‘digital commodities,’ not ‘securities.’
Frankly, I believe this announcement significantly reduced market uncertainty. Now, the big picture of the U.S. virtual asset oversight system is beginning to take shape. Of course, it’s still too early to be entirely optimistic as congressional legislative processes remain, but it’s clearly an important first step.

Tokenized Assets and the Ambition of ‘Project Crypto’

Just as noteworthy as virtual asset regulation is the SEC’s movement regarding tokenized assets. Recently, the U.S. Congress and regulatory authorities have been accelerating discussions on the introduction of tokenized assets. The SEC is preparing to introduce an ‘investment innovation exemption’ for tokenized assets, which is highly likely to function as a type of regulatory sandbox. Simply put, it’s a temporary suspension of regulations to help new technologies establish themselves in the market.
In particular, the SEC, led by Chairman Paul Atkins, is pursuing an ambitious plan called ‘Project Crypto.’ This is a vision to move the traditional securities market onto the blockchain to create a market with instant settlements, which could completely overturn the financial market landscape if realized. However, there are also voices from Wall Street urging caution, arguing that such broad regulatory exemptions could weaken investor protection and cause market confusion. It seems the tug-of-war between innovation and stability will continue.

The SEC’s role is not limited to the crypto market. Their presence in the traditional securities market remains strong. Just in April 2026, news broke that Elon Musk’s SpaceX confidentially submitted a draft registration for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to the SEC.
