Did you happen to catch the news this morning? Honestly, I was quite surprised. It’s about fighter jets, something so familiar yet so distant to us. Did you know that even at this very moment, fierce aerial battles are raging somewhere in the world, while at the same time, incredible technologies that will change the future are being developed?
Personally, when I think of fighter jets, they somehow feel like a scene from a movie, and yet they are also crucial to our national security. Especially in times like these, I feel even more interested. Today, I’d like to frankly discuss some ‘shocking’ recent news about fighter jets that we might not have known about.
1. US F-15, F-35 Fighter Jet Shootdown News – What Happened?
Recently, unsettling news has been coming from the Middle East. There have been claims that a US F-15 fighter jet and an F-35 stealth fighter jet were shot down by Iranian forces. Unbelievable, right? Furthermore, an intense standoff is reportedly occurring between the US and Iran over the whereabouts of the missing US pilot. The US has even deployed special forces for search operations, and Iran has gone so far as to offer a reward for capturing the pilot alive. It’s truly a movie-like scenario unfolding in reality.
Frankly, hearing such news inevitably weighs heavily on the heart. War is always a tragedy. But at the same time, the fact that even the most advanced fighter jets can be shot down like this is truly shocking, and it makes one realize anew how rapidly the landscape of modern warfare is changing. Of course, the US side has not officially confirmed it, but the situation certainly seems serious.
2. Our Own ‘KF-21 Boramae‘ Finally on the Brink of Deployment!
Meanwhile, South Korea has also delivered tremendous news. It’s the announcement that the first production model of the Korean fighter jet, KF-21 Boramae, has finally rolled out! Since President Kim Dae-jung first mentioned the development of a domestic fighter jet in 2001, over 20 years of immense effort have been invested. Isn’t it truly something to be proud of, to finally see the fruits of that labor?
The KF-21 is classified as a 4.5-generation fighter jet, boasting a top speed of Mach 1.8 and a maximum range of 2,900 km. Specifically,
* It successfully completed its first flight in July 2022.
* Manufacturing is set to begin in 2026, with 40 units to be delivered to our air force by 2028, and a total of 120 units by 2032.
* It recently successfully completed its final development flight tests, meaning its operational deployment is truly just around the corner.
Personally, thinking about the KF-21 steadfastly defending our airspace brings a sense of relief, and I’m also excited to see how much further it will develop.
3. Skipping 4.5 Generation to Go Straight to 6th Generation? Korea’s ‘Unconventional’ Future Strategy
The successful development of the KF-21 Boramae is astonishing enough, but South Korea isn’t stopping there; it’s envisioning an even bigger picture. The news is that it’s challenging the development of a 6th-generation fighter jet. Unlike the US and Europe, which are developing 6th-generation jets sequentially after 4th and 5th generations, we have chosen an ‘unconventional’ strategy of going directly from the 4.5-generation KF-21 to the 6th generation.
The 89.8 billion won 6th-generation fighter jet bridge technology development project, led by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), has already begun. This includes goals such as:
* Securing infrared stealth technology
* Integrating manned-unmanned teaming technology
* Developing enhanced stealth capabilities and internal weapon bays
Isn’t that truly amazing? Skipping the 5th generation and going straight to the 6th couldn’t have been an easy decision, which means there’s a corresponding level of confidence in our technological capabilities. If this challenge succeeds, the Republic of Korea will truly stand tall as a leading defense powerhouse.
