Farewell My Concubine: Why the Timeless Masterpiece Returns

Do you know that overwhelming feeling when you rediscover a forgotten classic? I recently had such an experience. It was on April 1, 2026, the 23rd anniversary of the late actor Leslie Cheung’s passing, when the film Farewell My Concubine returned to theaters. Honestly, as soon as I heard the news, my heart swelled. This film is more than just a work; it’s something eternally etched in our hearts. Personally, Farewell My Concubine is one of my all-time favorite films. That’s why this re-release news felt even more special. I’d like to share with you why this timeless masterpiece still moves so many people.

Farewell My Concubine, why is it still talked about?

In fact, the title ‘Farewell My Concubine’ is taken from a work of Chinese Peking Opera. It tells the tragic love story of Xiang Yu, the Hegemon-King of Western Chu, and his concubine Yu Ji. The film uses this Peking Opera as a backdrop to portray the tumultuous lives of two Peking Opera actors living through the turbulent 20th-century modern history of China.Director Chen Kaige’s delicate direction, combined with the incredible passionate performances of actors like Leslie Cheung, Gong Li, and Zhang Fengyi, stunned the world by winning the Palme d’Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. This film also set a record as the first Chinese-language film to win the Palme d’Or. I remember being truly overwhelmed by its scale and depth when I first saw it.

The life of ‘Dieyi’ made possible by Leslie Cheung

Honestly, when talking about this film, you can’t leave out actor Leslie Cheung. His portrayal of ‘Dieyi’ was truly overwhelming. Playing the role of Yu Ji in the Peking Opera ‘Farewell My Concubine,’ he lives as a beautiful woman on stage, but in reality, he suffers from an intense love and obsession for his partner ‘Xiaolou.’Leslie Cheung perfectly expressed Dieyi’s complex inner world and confusion about his sexual identity. His delicate yet powerful performance made Dieyi’s tragic fate even more poignant. Throughout the film, I felt the pain in every one of Dieyi’s gazes. I truly believe his acting was a timeless masterpiece.

Tragic love and human desire amidst turbulent history

Tragic love and human desire amidst turbulent history

This film goes beyond a simple love story of Peking Opera actors, deeply exploring inherent human desire and love that penetrates China’s tragic history. The characters in the film survive and love in their own ways amidst the turbulent currents of history, from the Warlord Era to the Japanese occupation, and the Cultural Revolution. I personally found this part very impressive. In particular, the madness and violence of the Cultural Revolution completely shook the lives of the Peking Opera actors. Stage and reality, art and politics, love and betrayal intertwine, driving the characters’ fates further into tragedy. Watching this film, we see both the indomitable human dignity and fragility amidst the pain of the era. That’s why I vividly remember feeling a lump in my throat long after the film ended.

A timeless masterpiece, worth rewatching

I believe this re-release news will be a wonderful opportunity not only for fans who miss Leslie Cheung but also for those who have yet to experience this masterpiece. Although 23 years have passed, the message and emotion conveyed by ‘Farewell My Concubine’ are still valid.Through ‘Farewell My Concubine’ on the big screen after a long time, why not revisit the forgotten emotions and reflect once again on the meaning of our lives? I think I’ll be rushing to the theater soon. I highly recommend you all experience it again!
