Successive Serious Accidents, Recurring Safety Complacency
At the end of June 2026, a tragic accident occurred at a Hyundai E&C site, the Ulsan Shaheen Project, where a subcontractor in his 50s died due to a soil collapse during formwork dismantling. This was one of four safety accidents that occurred in the past two months. Major and minor accidents, such as missing rebar at the GTX Samseong Station construction site, the collapse of a bridge in Eco Delta City, and the collapse of rebar in Gwangmyeong 11 District, have been incessant. Furthermore, the shocking fact that 22 workers have died at Hyundai E&C sites over the past five years is alarming. This is the highest number among the top 10 construction companies, raising fundamental questions about ‘safety management.’
Ministry of Employment and Labor’s Special Supervision: Will It Be the Start of Change?
In response to the series of serious accidents, the Ministry of Employment and Labor has launched a special inspection of Hyundai E&C. This is interpreted as a strong commitment to examine the company’s entire safety system, going beyond a simple check. While several construction companies have undergone special inspections due to serious accidents in the past, the severity of this Hyundai E&C case is particularly highlighted. This inspection will thoroughly investigate problems in the safety management system, risk factors in the working environment, and the management status of subcontractors. Many hope that this will serve as an opportunity for the establishment of a genuine safety culture, rather than just temporary penalties like fines or business suspensions.
Efforts and Challenges for Safety Innovation
Hyundai E&C is also aware of the seriousness of safety issues and is making various efforts. Recently, it hosted the ‘2026 H-Safe Open Innovation Demoday’ in collaboration with startups to strengthen construction site safety, seeking to introduce innovative technologies. Attempts to apply advanced technologies such as generative AI, extended reality (XR), and multilingual safety education platforms to the field to eliminate safety blind spots are positive. However, ultimately, what is important is a change in practical, field-oriented safety awareness and culture beyond the introduction of technology. This is because even the best system is useless if it does not function properly on site.
